If you're anything like me, when you think of spring break you think of sunshine, a trip somewhere (for us it's usually to the beach) and relaxation! Well, we learned this year that sometimes that just isn't the case!
Earlier this year Josh tore his ACL playing church basketball. I could hardly believe it when he called me that night and told me he had hurt his knee. I figured he would ice it up and in a day or two it would be as good as new. NOPE! The next day it was swollen and hurting so badly he could hardly walk! REALLY?!?!? Oh yes! Really! Our pastor got him an appointment with an orthopedic surgeon to check it out and before you can say lickedy split our worst suspicions were confirmed....torn ACL and SURGERY! Yikes! ***Just an aside...Josh's surgeon was an All American football player at Auburn in the 80's. He played with Bo Jackson and later went on and played in the NFL for a short time. He even has a star on the Auburn Walk of Fame! Next time we're in town we'll have to check that out for sure! I think meeting Dr. Carr more than made up for the impending surgery (at least in Josh's eyes)!***
After some thought we decided that Josh should have his surgery over spring break so the girls and I could be in town with him to "help" him recover! (This living in 2 states business is for the birds!) We scheduled the surgery for Monday and early that morning Josh and I crawled in the car and headed to Birmingham and the hospital. Thankfully, the girls were able to spend the day with Grandmother and didn't have to hang out at the hospital all day. We met Josh's parents at the hospital and checked in, ready to get our day over with. We had quite a long day of waiting (and waiting and waiting!). Finally, it was time for the surgery to start! Let me just brag for a minute on Brookwood hospital and Dr. Carr. They were so considerate...everyone took the time to talk to us and answer questions and when we were in the waiting room, Dr. Carr sent a nurse out to let us know when the actual surgery had started and how long to expect it to last. Dr. Carr also met with us after the surgery when Josh was in recovery and brought pictures to explain exactly what he did. It turns out that Josh had also torn his miniscus so they had to repair that as well which ended up taking a little longer than expected.
After about three hours, I was able to go and see Josh in recovery and after about another hour Josh was ready to go home. He was pretty out of it and in some pain but overall he seemed to be feeling pretty well. Josh came home in a hinged brace from hip to ankle and toting a set of crutches! It looked like knee surgery was more than we had bargained for!
Josh really did great! After only about a day and a half he was able to get upstairs and was hardly using his crutches at all. AND by the end of the week he was totally off of his pain meds, able to drive, starting physical therapy and not using his crutches at all. He even did the Lord's Supper at church on Thursday night and did the Children's sermon on Easter Sunday! What a trooper! By the time the girls and I headed home yesterday afternoon, I felt good about leaving him!
So, while it wasn't the most fun way to spend spring break, there's no denying that it was an exciting one! And as usaul, the Thompsons were able to squeeze in a few visits and at least a little fun! :)
